The Walk That Started It All

Sunday, 17 May 2026

There was something special about that Sunday morning.

As the sun rose over Swanbourne, girls began arriving one by one outside the surf lifesaving club. Some came with friends, but many came completely on their own. There were a few nervous smiles, quiet introductions and the familiar feeling that comes with walking into a room, or in this case, a beach car park, where you don’t know anyone.

Within a few kilometres, that feeling had disappeared.

Our very first West Co Club event brought together over 60 women for a coastal walk from Swanbourne to South Cottesloe. What started as a simple idea, to get outdoors, move our bodies and meet like-minded people became something much bigger.

The morning couldn’t have been more perfect. Blue skies, sunshine, the sound of waves beside us and the cutest dogs. Conversations flowed naturally as the kilometres passed. People swapped stories, laughed together and discovered just how much they had in common.

On the walk back, we stopped at Longview Café for coffee, breakfast and the kind of conversations that always seem to happen after spending a morning outside. Tables filled with people who, only a few hours earlier, had been complete strangers.

One of the most memorable moments came after the event had officially finished.

A small group decided to go rock climbing together. None of them had met before that morning. By the end of the day, they had made plans beyond the walk itself, a reminder that sometimes all it takes is one shared adventure to create a new friendship.

That has always been the heart of West Co Club.

Not just creating events, but creating opportunities for connection. A place where saying yes to a Sunday morning could lead to finding your next hiking buddy, coffee date or lifelong friend.

Looking back, the biggest takeaway wasn’t the number of people who came. It was watching a group of women arrive feeling a little shy and uncertain, then leave laughing together as though they’d known each other for years.

This first walk reminded us that community doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sometimes it starts with a sunrise, a coastal path, a good coffee and the courage to show up.

And this was only the beginning.
