What to Wear Coastal Hiking

What to Wear Coastal Hiking

If you’ve ever searched “what to wear hiking”, you’ve probably been met with bulky backpacks, cargo pants and outfits that feel more practical than personal.

At West Co, we don’t think you should have to choose between looking good and feeling prepared.

The best hiking outfit is one that lets you move comfortably, keeps you confident and suits the adventure ahead whether you’re heading out for a sunrise coastal walk, spending the afternoon on a trail or stopping for coffee afterwards.

Start with a supportive top

Choose something that offers enough support for movement without feeling restrictive.

For warmer weather, a longline tank or sports bra paired with high waisted shorts is lightweight, breathable and comfortable enough to wear all day.

For cooler mornings, layer with an oversized fleece or lightweight jacket that you can easily tie around your waist as the day warms up.

Choose bottoms you’ll actually enjoy walking in

One of the biggest mistakes people make is wearing activewear that constantly needs adjusting.

Look for:

  • High rise waistbands that stay in place.
  • Stretch fabrics that move with you.
  • Pockets large enough for your phone or keys.
  • Flat seams to minimise rubbing on longer walks.

Comfort becomes even more important when you’re walking for several hours.

Layer for changing weather

Outdoor adventures rarely stay the same from start to finish.

A chilly sunrise can quickly turn into a warm afternoon, so wearing layers gives you flexibility without carrying unnecessary weight.

Think lightweight fleeces, oversized crews or breathable jackets that are easy to throw on and off throughout the day.

Don’t forget the essentials

Every hike is different, but we always recommend bringing:

  • A reusable water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Snacks
  • Phone
  • Lightweight waterproof layer if the forecast is uncertain

Small details often make the biggest difference.

Wear clothes that fit your lifestyle

One of our favourite things about hiking is that it rarely ends on the trail.

More often than not, it finishes with coffee, breakfast or wandering through your favourite local café.

Your outfit should feel just as comfortable sitting with friends afterwards as it did climbing the last hill.

That’s the kind of clothing we design at West Co, pieces that move effortlessly from trail to table without sacrificing comfort or style.

Because getting outdoors should feel good.

And so should what you’re wearing.
